Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion at the University of Sheffield
Between October 2020 and September 2022, I was the researcher representative on the Department of Computer Science's Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee. I represented the department in the Faculty of Engineering's working group on race too.
During my tenure, I made efforts to raise awareness of neurodiversity and systemic racism. I invited Siena Castellon, an internationally recognised neurodiversity advocate, to give a Women+@DCS seminar in January 2021. I also contributed to an anti-racism reading group. We scoured the literature for ideas for dismantling systemic racism in computer science.
More generally, I contributed to discussions in working groups focusing on gender issues; cultural competence; and wellbeing, neurodiversity, and accessibility. Parts of our discussions were used to design an action plan, which was proposed to the executive committee. It helped the department renew its Athena SWAN Silver Award for five years in September 2021.
In May 2021, I helped organise the biennial departmental EDI survey. Then, in the summer, we set up a project to make our undergraduate curriculum more inclusive, leading to a Google site suggesting practical interventions.
